How to Submit a Complaint

Complaints should be submitted to the EngSoc Ombudsperson, a neutral third-party officer:

Who Can a Complaint Be Made About?

Complaints may be made about:

  • EngSoc Officers

  • Project Directors and members of their team

  • Members of the Board of Directors

  • Members of affiliated clubs

Reasons for a Complaint

A complaint may be made regarding:

  • Harassment

  • Sexual violence

  • Defamation or slander

  • Failure to fulfill the responsibilities of a role

  • Violations of the University of Toronto Code of Student Conduct

  • Violations of the Standards of Affiliation under the Policy on Affiliated Clubs

Anonymous Complaints

Complaints may be submitted anonymously unless the complainant’s identity is necessary to investigate the matter.

Information Required in a Complaint

Complaints must include sufficient detail to allow an investigation to begin.

Possible Responses

Following an investigation, possible responses include:

  • No action, if there is insufficient evidence, the actions are not considered misconduct, or the actions occurred outside the relevant time period of the individual’s role

  • An offer to mediate a solution

  • Creation of a factual recommendation report that is considered by the relevant executive body (typically the Club Affiliation Committee or Board of Directors), with appropriate protections for privacy

The investigator cannot take executive action independently.

Possible Recommendations

Recommendations resulting from an investigation may include:

  • Removal of the subject from their position

  • Actions under Section 0.9 of the Policy on Affiliated Clubs

  • Additional training requirements

  • An official apology

  • Referral to Campus Police

  • Referral to governmental law enforcement

  • Referral to the Office of the Faculty Dean

  • Referral to the Division of Student Life

  • Referral to the Office of the University Provost

  • Amendments to EngSoc bylaws or policies

  • Other specific actions with additional justification

  • Any combination of the above
